Wardrobe, concert, and red carpet stylists I spoke with all agree on a single theory about Lopez's recent on-stage sartorial selections: The woman knows what she's referencing. And it's working.
"The look makes you remember what she's all about," says Darius Baptist, who is dressing Austin Mahone for his upcoming summer tour. "What you remember about Jennifer Lopez, aside from talent, is that dress."
So revealing was this number that, when Lopez took the stage to present an award with then-megastar David Duchovny, Duchovny quipped, "This is the first time in five or six years that I'm sure that nobody is looking at me."
Referring to the bodysuit
version of the dress that Lopez wore to her recent New York concert,
Baptist says, "The minute I saw that picture, [the Grammy moment] was
the first thing that popped into my head."
And you can bet he's not alone;
others who witnessed that Grammy moment also likely relived it when they
saw Lopez at her recent live performances. And thus, they're reminded
of that bold younger Lopez, the sexy, high-fashion upstart.
"There is definitely a motive
behind every fashion decision," Hilfiger tells me. "She has recently
released new music, and I think she feels that revisiting her most
talked-about look will generate more press. This is a smart career move
because Jennifer Lopez is J.Lo for a reason. She knows what to do and
how to do it right.”
