Burning Question: Why Won't Jennifer Lopez Stop Referencing Her Grammy Dress?

Why does J.Lo keep referencing her infamous Grammy dress to this day? She wore a costume inspired by that low-cut Versace number at her concert in the Bronx recently, donned a jumpsuit version of the palm-tree printed dress in her "I Luv Ya Papi" video (released in March), and a similar-looking green sequined leotard during her performance at the opening ceremony of the 2014 World Cup on Thursday. Why why why?
Because here I am, writing an article about J. Lo's concert style. And because here you are, reading it. And here we all are, keeping Jennifer Lopez in the news.
Wardrobe, concert, and red carpet stylists I spoke with all agree on a single theory about Lopez's recent on-stage sartorial selections: The woman knows what she's referencing. And it's working.
"The look makes you remember what she's all about," says Darius Baptist, who is dressing Austin Mahone for his upcoming summer tour. "What you remember about Jennifer Lopez, aside from talent, is that dress."

That dress indeed. In case you were a fetus or Cub Scout or something during the 2000 Grammy awards, a reminder: the front of Lopez's Versace dress was so low cut that we could see all the way from her clavicle in the north to her belly button in the south, not to mention a generous swath of décolletage sweeping from east to west.
So revealing was this number that, when Lopez took the stage to present an award with then-megastar David Duchovny, Duchovny quipped, "This is the first time in five or six years that I'm sure that nobody is looking at me."

"That was the defining moment that put Jennifer Lopez on the map and on top of many best dressed lists," says fashion commentator Jaimie Hilfiger, whose famous family worked with Lopez on two of her clothing lines.Cut to today and you can bet that whenever Lopez refers to that night, at least, in costume form, all eyes are still on her. And all the blogs.

Referring to the bodysuit version of the dress that Lopez wore to her recent New York concert, Baptist says, "The minute I saw that picture, [the Grammy moment] was the first thing that popped into my head."
And you can bet he's not alone; others who witnessed that Grammy moment also likely relived it when they saw Lopez at her recent live performances. And thus, they're reminded of that bold younger Lopez, the sexy, high-fashion upstart.

"There is definitely a motive behind every fashion decision," Hilfiger tells me. "She has recently released new music, and I think she feels that revisiting her most talked-about look will generate more press. This is a smart career move because Jennifer Lopez is J.Lo for a reason. She knows what to do and how to do it right.”
